Goatsbridge Trout Farm at the Foodcamp 2012

Goatsbridge certainly didn’t miss the Foodcamp at the “Savour festival” in Kilkenny! In fact, Mag Kirwan, one of the directors of Goatsbridge, organized it all. The topic of the Foodcamp was “Taking Back Our Food – Avoiding a delicious disaster!”.  This was a very good chance to talk to people about aquaculture and its role in supply your table with good quality seafood products.  Elena Piana, fish scientist of the farm, gave a presentation with the topic “What’s All This Farmed Fish Rumour About?”. Our esteemed guest was Shane Hunter, director of AquaBiotech, who gave a presentation on the latest technological advances in aquaculture production. Shane Hunter is the director of AquaBiotech, a leading independent aquaculture, fisheries and environmental consulting, company located in Malta and operating on a truly global scale.

During Elena’s talk a few interesting topics came up.  For example “What does “organic” really mean? What is the real definition of this word? Everyone stood up to give his/her own opinions and it was fantastic!!!

Mag Kirwan, who is shortlisted for the South East Female Excellence in Business award, runs Goatsbridge Trout Farm in Kilkenny with her husband. The biochemist has been trying to change the image of trout among Irish consumers. “We, as an industry, were very poor to promote this product,” she admitted. “We lost our market share. Good Food Ireland – Goatsbridge Trout Farm

Eco Friendly Fish Farm: It is hard to say when the story of Goatsbridge Trout really begins. Is it with the monks who fished on the banks of the Little Arrigle at Jerpoint Abbey in the twelfth century? Is it with Padraig Kirwan who, along with wife Rita, developed a business selling trout to local Kilkenny restaurants and hotels in the 60′s and 70′s? The truth is that it really doesn’t matter. In fact, the truth is that Goatsbridge Trout is about all of its history.
